Forever a Queen (Irish Traveller #3) – Danica Winters

Expected publication date: September 4, 2018

Cover blurb:

The intoxicating conclusion to Publisher’s Weekly bestselling author Danica Winters’ Irish Traveller trilogy, perfect for fans of Nalini Singh and Karen Marie Moning.

Once held back by her Traveller roots, Helena has finally come to terms with not only who she is, but also who she can be–a protector of people like her, supernaturals. The bigoted Human Group, who seek to suppress the magically gifted, have planned a siege of Adare Manor with the intent to permanently destroy the gateway to the spiritual world that resides within its walls.

With her love Graham at her side, Helena is forced to fight for the lives of people like themselves. Aligned with them are The Fallen, angels cursed for their pasts. One member of the Fallen, Priscilla, has infiltrated the Human Group with a plan to stop their leader, her own father. While her brusque manner chafes Helena, having an ally in Priscilla gives them a greater chance to protect the future of all supernaturals.

As Samhain approaches, thinning the boundaries of our world and the spiritual, our heroes will marshal all their powers at Adare Manor. However, when magic is involved there is one rule–whatever you send out, you will get back.

This is the final book in the Irish Traveller trilogy, and while I’m sad to not have any more Helena and Graham to read about in the future, at least it was a satisfying conclusion!   (And by satisfying, I mean Cora/mam gets her due…I haven’t disliked a character that much in a while, sorry not sorry!)

When the story begins, Helena and Graham are on the road, trying to keep the people at Adare Manor safe after the HG (Humanity Group) bombed the hospital for supernaturals that was opened under the Manor.  Graham rescues a woman who is attempting to jump off a clilff, and they discover that Priscilla is another supernatural and she has been living in a Traveller campsite.  They return her to Doolin, and Helena notices that Graham appears overly interested in Priscilla when they arrive.  Troubled, she decides to explore and is shocked to discover not only her cousin Lydia but her mam and Rionna (her younger sister) are there as well.  Fearing a confrontation, Helena goes back to Priscilla’s wagon to get Graham and leave.  Priscilla asks to go with them, and on the way out they are confronted by a large group who try to prevent their escape.  Priscilla uses her powers to get them out and they decide to hole up in an abandoned castle for the night.

They are shocked that the castle isn’t what it seems, and hides the Hall of Records, an antechamber of the veil and Priscilla is a member of the Fallen.  She also discloses that the HG is seeking the Codex Gigas that Graham has hidden at the Manor.  If the HG are able to steal the grimoire, they will become an even greater threat to the supernaturals in both realms. They must find a way to save themselves and those they love from the HG, but can they trust Priscilla is telling the truth?

I have to admit that I was really not sure about whether I was going to like Priscilla, so while reading the book I was inwardly cringing at times, expecting the worst.  While I don’t want to give away the twists and turns, I will say that her backstory is heartbreaking and a lot of things are explained when she finally reveals it to Helena.  And of course Graham remains my favorite character!  He has a heart of gold and the demonstration of his true love for Helena just cemented that for me.  There are some other surprises in store for Helena before the final showdown with the HG, and the final chapter is AMAZING, sniff!!

This is definitely one series where you need to read all three in order to understand the nuances.  The depth of research and care Danica has taken with portraying the Irish Travellers is readily apparent, in order to honor a group that has been historically ill-treated.  I would definitely recommend this series to PNR readers and those who like a ‘deeper’ aspect to their romances!

A big thank you to Danica for providing an eARC of this book to R&R but as always, the content of the review is my own.  (And yes, I will be adding a paperback to my collection when available!!)
